September Literacy Centers and a sale!

I'm FINALLY done! I got so many requests for a September menu, especially for you all who start school in August. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I don't start until after labor day, but I will use this menu to introduce the whole process. I usually started in October, but why wait? What I plan on doing is introducing the menu and all these centers from September in a whole class modeling/guided setting.

In case you are a new follower, I've made monthly literacy centers that include a menu for students. Every menu has four columns: reading, word work, writing, and sentence building.

As students complete their centers, they color them in on their menu. It's nice to have the whole month's  worth of literacy centers in one pack ready to go! I integrate daily 5 into my reading workshop as well. To read more about how I do that, you can click here.

I've taken snap shots of some of the pages in this 105 page pack.

Read, Visualize Draw:
I did two different formats shown below.

Read and Sequence: Apple Picking

Rebuild a Poem:
Put this poem on sentence strips then in a pocket chart and have them rebuild it. You can just leave certain words out, or you can have them rebuild the whole thing (with just the first word of each sentence given).

Read, Think, Match:
I've included 3 different apple-themed of varying levels (one is shown below) and two school-themed.

Apple Sort:
Students will read each apple word and decide if they are real or nonsense words. They will sort and record the words.

Word Family Bus:
There are four buses with different word families and several letter cards. Students will place the letter cards on each bus to make words.

Make a Word:

Students will connect the chalkboards to make words.

Picture Sort: short a and short i
Students will look at the pictures and decide which vowel sound they hear, then sort onto sorting mat and record words on student sheet.

Match a Sentence:
Students match the beginning of the sentence to the end to match the picture. There are 8 apple sentences, 4 zoo sentences and 4 school sentences to choose from.

Flip a Sentence:
Make the flip book provided and have your students flip through to make different sentences.

Sentence Scrambler:
Four sentences to unscramble and record.

Word Endings: adding s
Students will read each sentence and decide if the blank needs a word with or without an -s.

Summer Stories: Students will write about their summers.

Spin and Write:
Spin the picture "wheel" and make a sentence about that picture. Early finishers will spin to make a story.

Sticker Story: use stickers to create a scene that inspires a story.

Be an Author: Students create their own book about school.

Also included are directions for the teacher

a rubric and a checklist.

  6. Sarah, truly amazing! I do have a couple of questions. 1. What do the students do with their papers after each rotation if they've been working on a menu center. 2. How many menu centers do they do each day? 3. Do they complete the whole menu by the end of the month? 4.how do you grade these or how do you use their "hand in sheets" as grades? 5. Other than them coloring the activity they worked on that day on their menu, how do you keep their turned in sheets organized to keep track of who has done what? 6. Do you track it daily? Weekly. Monthly? Thanks
